I feel the duty to tell you what The Hair Politics is and what it ISN’T! So here’s the unapologetic truth!
I believe you’re here for a reason. I’d like to say you’re heaven-sent but that could be my over-analytical, spiritual self, proclaiming that because first I have to make sure you’re here to get what you actually want. That’s important, I’d rather NOT waste either one of our precious time. So I really want to get clear on why you’re here (or why you should be).
The Hair Politics was officially established in 2016 (solely by ya girl) to help women achieve their long, thick, and most importantly HEALTHY hair goals with ease and as quickly as they possibly can.
The reason I focus on this and NOT hair tutorials on twistouts, bantu knots, perm rod sets, etc., is because success in your hair journey does NOT stem from what you physically do. (Nope sure doesn’t!) Because it actually stems from how you feel about your hair. This reason you may be struggling to reach one of your hair goals is likely because you haven’t actually addressed how you truly feel about the hair upon your pretty head.
Ever been excited about trying something new with your hair, and then a few weeks later, you’re back to your old ways of neglect and laziness? I won’t go much deeper right now, but honey…tisk tisk. That’s a sign that you’re in danger of disappointing yourself time and time again no matter what you do.
I see my sistas falling into this trap all the time: They rave about a new product/challenge/method/anything and like clockwork, you soon see everyone and their mama (literally) hopping on and trying it out too. Now the actions are not the problem. Indeed any of these new things has the possibility to help one or all naturals in their journey. The problem is the mindset these naturals have going into it.
Most of the time, the naturals that are so hype to try it because it’s new and “innovative” are only that excited because they’re desperate to try something that’ll finally work. If you feel like this is you or you’ve ever found yourself saying things like, “If I stay consistent with this (new whatever it is), hopefully my hair’s health/length/thickness will improve…” I need you to do yourself a favor, right now:
STOP WATCHING/READING HAIR VIDEOS/TUTORIALS!
And I say this for your protection. It’s possible that stuff is making your journey frustrating! I’ve realized the influx of natural hair gurus unknowingly created a gap, or a gray area, between them and who they’re helping. See, actually the hair videos on YouTube and etc. are there serve only ONE purpose…teaching you something you didn’t know or have perfected before. A technique.
But what they don’t teach is how to have a goal BEFORE you even look them up! Or how to be optimistic before trying something new and what to do WHEN things don’t turn out how you expect. And ironically, it’s the most important part!
It could be the difference between you being completely HAPPY with your natural hair or you searching the beauty store aisles for a decent perm kit. I don’t think a relaxer will make you happy. And I won’t be able to stand seeing you unhappy, especially with hair that’s uniquely your own that many others would envy! Seriously, the grass is never greener and this is why THP was born! I’m all about health/length/love of natural hair, it can SEEM difficult and people can tell you that it is, but in all seriousness–from my experience it’s really not. I had a surprisingly easy and smooth transition from no more relaxer or permanent color in 2012-2013. So when I was asked questions from others, I couldn’t understand why they were so frustrated. But I figured it out. And I wish I knew back then what I know now because I would’ve said…”(bye Felicia) It’s all in your MIND!”
Are you searching through hair videos and articles because you’re trying to reach a goal or reach a plan? The two are dangerously different. You may PLAN to have a bomb twist-out or rod set but your GOAL is for it to come out right and sustain for as long as it needs to hold. Hair tutorials are simply suggested PLANS. That’s why every guru’s video is a little different. And every natural that views them all have different reasons as to why they’re there. So what’s yours when you search for those tutorials?
If you can complete this sentence, I think we’re off to a good start…
I look up articles and videos mainly about ______ because I really want to ______! (Psst, first blank is the plan, second blank is the GOAL). Answer this truthfully and as detailed as possible.
So now that we have your true goal, why don’t we work on getting there NOW? Is your mind in to win it?
